How Chempro Chemists future-proofed their online store

With online sales continuing to grow, Chempro Chemists wanted to ensure their AWS-based e-commerce platform could scale seamlessly—without service disruption or rising costs. To fully leverage the flexibility of AWS, they turned to us at Habitat3 for help.
Chempro are one of Australia’s largest and fastest-growing pharmacy groups, with over 150 stores across South-East Queensland and Northern New South Wales. In addition to this extensive retail presence, Chempro operates their highly successful online store on AWS, offering a wide range of health and personal care products.
The Challenge
The goal was to implement a more robust, scalable, and cost-effective cloud architecture that could handle increasing demand while delivering a flawless customer experience 24/7, 365 days a year. In addition, Chempro was keen to ensure security was tightened and that all services were fully cost optimised.
As Chempro’s Online Manager, Caitlin Probert said at the time – “We wanted to ensure our online store could keep up with customer demand while maintaining high performance, security, and cost efficiency. Partnering with Habitat3 gave us confidence that our AWS infrastructure would be optimised for both our current needs and future growth.”
The Solution
To meet this, we implemented a modern multi-tier AWS architecture featuring auto-scaling and high availability—improving performance, security, and cost efficiency.
We focused on three core pillars:
Servers & Autoscaling
We migrated four websites to new, up-to-date Ubuntu servers and deployed an auto-scaling group to match demand and optimise cost.
Databases & File Storage
We enabled multi-AZ high availability on RDS and upgraded MySQL to avoid legacy support fees. We also added Amazon EFS for fast, shared storage across EC2 instances.
Security Enhancements
We enhanced security with AWS Shield, WAF, GuardDuty, CloudWatch, Config, and best-practice IAM configuration
Outcomes and Benefits
By working with Habitat3, Chempro was able to future-proof its e-commerce store by re-architecting their AWS Cloud infrastructure. This new environment allows them to scale their e-commerce store effortlessly, handling peak shopping periods without disruption, and provide customers with a best-in-class online experience – all without spending any more than absolutely necessary!
