How McGregor Diesel Optimised Their AWS Services with Habitat3

Overview
McGregor Diesel, established in Goondiwindi in 2008, provides repairs and maintenance for earthmoving equipment, irrigation pumps, engines, and agricultural machinery. Founded by Shane and Amanda McGregor, the business is known for its friendly, professional service and reliable support. They specialise in both new and older model machinery and offer onsite diagnostics, servicing, and repairs using advanced Caterpillar systems like ET and SIS.
Innovation is at the heart of McGregor Diesel. This is reflected in their custom-built online platform that receives and stores telemetry and data points from diesel equipment—such as fuel levels and GPS tracking—allowing clients to access and act on this data in real time.
When Mandy McGregor agreed to participate in our Value Optimisation Workshop, her goal was simple:

The Process
Our one-on-one Value Optimisation Workshop starts with a free 30-minute discovery session where we review a client’s last three months of AWS invoices and any architecture diagrams they may have. From there, we book a 2-hour paid session where we do a deep-dive into their environment and get hands-on to identify—and fix—inefficiencies on the spot.
The Result
During McGregor Diesel’s session, we identified a major cost issue:
Six database instances were running an outdated version of MySQL Server
This triggered Extended Support fees of $2,000 per month
Habitat3 upgraded the databases to a supported version during the session
Immediate cost elimination—saving $24,000 per year
All of this was achieved in just a couple of hours.
The Future
What started as a quick optimisation session turned into a deeper engagement.
